Understanding CVV Length
CVV, or Card Verification Value, is a three or four-digit code on credit cards that acts as a security feature. It's typically found on the back of the card.
Three-Digit CVV
A three-digit CVV is usually seen on Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards. This code is used primarily for online purchases to verify that the cardholder has physical possession of the card.
Four-Digit CVV
A four-digit CVV is often used on American Express cards. This longer code serves the same purpose but includes additional digits to provide additional security measures.
How CVV is Used
During an online transaction, the CVV is entered along with the card number, expiration date, and the amount. The merchant's payment processor then sends a request to the issuing bank for authorization. If the CVV matches what the bank has on file, the transaction is approved.
