Cast and Setting
Gotham City, 1981. A garbage strike leaves trash on the sidewalks. Arthur Fleck lives in a small apartment with his mother, Penny, played by Frances Conroy. He works for a clown agency called Ha-Ha's. He sees a city social worker for counseling and takes seven medications. He keeps a notebook of jokes. Sophie Dumond, played by Zazie Beetz, is a neighbor he watches through her window.
First Act
Teenagers beat Arthur in an alley and destroy his sign. A co-worker named Randall gives him a gun. Arthur carries the gun into a children's hospital and drops it during a show. His boss fires him. On a subway, three Wayne Enterprises employees harass a woman, then beat Arthur. Arthur shoots all three. Thomas Wayne calls the victims good men in a televised statement. Protesters start wearing clown masks.
Family Records
Penny writes letters to Thomas Wayne and claims he is Arthur's father. Arthur visits Wayne Manor and meets Bruce, a child. Alfred Pennyworth tells him Penny has delusions. Arthur checks himself into Arkham State Hospital and reads her file. Penny adopted him. She allowed an abusive boyfriend to tie him to a radiator. That abuse caused his head injury and his laughter condition. Arthur smothers Penny with a pillow in her hospital bed.

Talk Show and Ending
Arthur kills Randall in his apartment and lets a co-worker named Gary leave unharmed. Murray Franklin, played by Robert De Niro, invites Arthur onto his talk show after a clip of Arthur's comedy set goes viral. On air, Arthur admits to the subway killings, insults Murray, and shoots him. Police arrest Arthur. A riot crashes the squad car on a street. Rioters pull him free. Arthur stands on the car and dances.
The last scene takes place in Arkham State Hospital. Arthur laughs alone, then tells his psychiatrist she would not get the joke. He walks down the hall with blood on his shoes. The film does not confirm what happens to her.
