Quick pick

Pick Authorize.net first when your main task is checking CVV and AVS responses in a controlled sandbox. Pick Square first when you want a simpler test setup for hosted payment fields. Both gateways let you test CVV validation with official sandbox card numbers. Neither gateway permits real cardholder data in a test account.

Request declined: testing card data against Square

Prerequisites

  • A developer account with the gateway you plan to test.
  • Sandbox API credentials from that account.
  • The gateway's published test card numbers. Do not use real card numbers or real CVVs.
  • A test checkout page that sends the CVV field to the sandbox endpoint.

Option 1: Authorize.net sandbox

  1. Create an Authorize.net developer sandbox account.
  2. Open the sandbox merchant interface and confirm that CVV verification is enabled.
  3. Copy the sandbox API login ID and transaction key into your test environment.
  4. Use only Authorize.net test card numbers and their matching test CVV values.
  5. Submit one test transaction for each CVV result you need: match, no match, and not processed.
  6. Record the response code and the CVV result field returned by the sandbox.
  7. Repeat the same cases with a second test card to confirm the result is stable.

Option 2: Square sandbox

  1. Create a Square developer account and open a sandbox application.
  2. Copy the sandbox application ID and access token into your test environment.
  3. Load the Square test card numbers listed in the developer documentation.
  4. Send a payment request with the CVV field included.
  5. Check the payment response for CVV verification details.
  6. Run one approved test case and one declined test case.
  7. Confirm that your checkout form clears the CVV field after each attempt.

What to compare

Compare four items: the range of CVV response codes, the clarity of the error messages, the speed of sandbox setup, and the amount of control over AVS and CVV rules. Authorize.net gives more knobs for rule-based testing. Square gives a shorter path to a working hosted checkout. For a small test suite, Square is enough. For a detailed fraud-response test matrix, Authorize.net is the better first choice.

Understanding the Square Test CVV Question

Security rule

Use test data only. Never enter a real CVV in a sandbox, a spreadsheet, or a support ticket. Store no CVV after authorization. PCI DSS applies to every system that handles cardholder data, including test systems that touch real data by mistake.
